The curriculum children follow at All Saints' First School is a skills based curriculum. We have worked very hard to ensure our curiculum meets the statutory requirements of the New National Curriculum 2014, whilst also focusing on key skills. Through the focus on 'key skills', we give deeper consideration to progression and continuity of our curriculum. We also take account of the distinctiveness of our school in our local context.
Our curriculum is organised so that there is every opportunity for pupils to make use of their literacy, numeracy and Computing skills within a creative model designed to enrich and excite.
As we have mixed classes, we have a rolling programme to ensure children do not repeat content. Our key skills progression ensures that children are taught at the right level for their needs. We have worked closely with the other schools in the Leek Education Partnership to ensure the curriculum is continuous throughout Key Stage 2, and that content in the foundation subjects is not repeated. We have our own home reading scheme, which combines many different published schemes, including Project X, Heinneman and Oxford Reading Tree. Books are banded according to ability and children are regularly assessed to ensure that their books are appropriate for their reading ability. In addition, we have group reading books, which are also leveled to match children's reading abilities. These books are used to support group reading activities on a weekly basis.
Our school teaches synthetic phonics, as one part of a wider strategy to teach reading. Within Early Years, the children have daily phonics sessions and are grouped into the appropriate phase according to their ability. In Key Stage 1 and 2, children have a daily class based phonics lesson, which includesyear groups phonics/spelling and phased phonics appropriate to their ability A structured phonics program, is delivered daily. As children progress, spelling strategies, including spelling patterns are taught. Children who need extra support have specific intervention programmes, which include phonics support if they have gaps in their phonic knowledge. In addition, children who need additional interventions are supported on an individual or small group basis.

Our aim is to provide a caring, happy, purposeful and challenging environment in which children can feel secure and confident. Learning takes place through structured play and through the provision of a wide range of planned experiences, helping children to develop their independence and social skills as sound foundations for their life-long learning.
Children are introduced to phonics from the beginning of the Foundation Stage using the Letters and Sounds phonics scheme.
Key Stage One covers Years 1and 2 (children aged 5 to 7). Year 1 is a time of transition and the 'Transition Curriculum' is carefully planned to help children move from the Foundation Stage curriculum to the National Curriculum.
The children continue to learn through structured learning activities, with the more 'formal' literacy and numeracy sessions gradually introduced. At the end of Year 2, our pupils undertake the Key Stage 1 national assessment tasks or tests (SATs) which all 7 year old children take.

We wish our pupils to become active, creative learners rather than passive receivers of information. At the end of Year 4 the children move to middle school and continue their Key Stage 2 curriculum within Year 5 and 6.
